The sleek Northrop Alpha carried six passengers inside it's all metal fuselage (although not necessarily in that much comfort!). The crew consisted of one pilot, who (unfortunately for him) had to brave the cold airstream both day and night in the external cockpit. It was first flown in 1931, with a total of 17 being built. -- L.G.
