"The Flying Wing"

The Northrop YB-49 "Flying Wing" was developed as a medium bomber for the U.S. Air Force in 1947. It was decades ahead of anything else in the air, but despite it's advanced design (which set several speed and altitude records), a series of disastrous crashes caused the program to be cancelled before it could be fully developed. Ironically, today's B2 Stealth Bomber (which is also a flying wing) is not only built by Northrop, but has the exact same wingspan ...to the inch! -- L.G.
